the staff

a mystic carries his staff
(representative of Guru's teachings
and grace)
like a one that could not
be sturdy without it
he carries it to steady himself
as he moves thru
the ups and downs of the world
he carries it to be not afraid
and disturbed by
any experience no matter how
joyous or how biting
he carries it to set himself
on the righteous path until
the heart is entered
and peace is an abiding
experience
he carries it to let no thoughts
be in charge of his journey
for he does not know the way
to the heart
he does not know the turns
and the passages that will come
around the corner
he does not know when it will end
but he does not worry
as he has within his heart
the guiding force
of non-dual wisdom that shines
when he finds himself in hard times
he goes to his own soul
to be within what is right
within quietude he dwells
he does not resist experience
but surrenders into what
comes as a wave that passes
and breathes and relaxes
in the heart
always moving this way
without fear or anxiety
he does not see without the grace given
he cannot be clear without the grace given
he cannot be steady without the grace given
so onward into himself he sinks
into this way of unknowing that will
bring in it's time
the greatest blessing of all of life
realization
stillness
freedom
the peace that passes
all understanding
this is the journey of the mystic

Buddha spoke of detachment..

when Buddha sat under the bodhi tree
he was filled with overwhelming emotions
and movement of mind
he saw many visions including mara the goddess
of deception dancing before him
he was not to be swayed by this
but continued steadfast in his meditation
he sat and sat and sat some more
all came forward from his consciousness
of other worlds and other lifetimes
images of fire burning and hell realms
and desires that took on forms of lust
and envy and pride
and all the things that haunt the soul so
much when in mind
he did not move, but continued to look deeply
at his mind that put out these images
and questioned what is true
are these images true that come and go
and play about?
or are they made up as fiction and have
no substance in themselves except for
what the mind attaches to?
he looked at this and saw that this movement
was not real in it's essence
for it did not remain and died away when looked at
he continued to question his mind
and penetrated it's layers with awareness
and eventually the mind stilled
as what was seen as false was not given
any more attention
and it withered and died away
leaving the beauty of the absolute alone

Buddha spoke always to the middle way
and detachment being primary
for without detachment the mind
was not to find freedom
this is why those on the path are to
*witness* what is here which creates a buffer
to the experience
and then one is not so lost in the mix of it all..
with this, the mind
begins to get some distance and clarity
on what is taking place
then from here
one can continue to go forward
into deeper waters..

living waters

the sadhu in the morning light
goes to bathe in the ganges
where he sets his coverings on the bank
he goes in naked and
does not look back at the steps
that lead into the world
he takes his form into the rushing waters
and sinks down deep where there is
simply the beauty of the absolute
he then
puts his head in the water
like a baptism
that sheds the impurities of
worldly attachments that
he has come to know
and he allows the waters to
take away from him his burden
that has been heavy to his soul
he does not resist the waters
for this is what his soul is made
of in truth
purity
and he is to be made unto this light
the sadhu has put to rest his
personal world
this is not his anymore
nor was it ever
he puts it down into the earth
at the bottom of the water
to be carried away with the current
for his personal life is not at all real truly
it is what has taken him somewhere else
out to the land of shadows
what then is he to do now
that his mind is purified in grace?
he does nothing at all
simply lives free without the false ways
he lives as a man that is pure
in mind and heart
he lives like a sage of beauty
he is light
and joy and truth
what else can he be?
when the ground is entered
for there is nowhere else to go

the sadhu that enters the waters of ganga
has within a burning desire for freedom
he is a man of desire
that is of only *one* desire
not many that are pulling him in opposite directions
he burns to know the truth
as a one that is thirsty and hungry
and trembling inside with the desire to know
and to be free of what it is that is unwell in heart and mind
he is a seeker of heart
not a seeker of the world and heart
this cannot be steady
it is to make a man wobbly on his feet and in his
mind because one cannot walk in two directions at once
he is a man that is on ONE road only
to the truth
he comes into the waters and dies there to the light
this is why his initiation is like his funeral truly
because he is not to return to his old life of mundane
experience in which he was a such and such
with a name and role and all of that
he is now a sadhu which is nameless and not
of an identity that can be put in a box anymore
so he merges with the waters of the divine
as if he was the *offering*
he *is* the offering
his attachment to body and mind are what are to go to the waters
and be dissolved there (within the light)
the sadhu then walks away into the world
but is not of it
he places his feet on the earth
and walks into the lands of the transient way
but he is not any more within the changing tides
his being is still and absorbed always in quietude

so this my friends is the way of the sadhu
that is sincere
it is not different than one the comes into the light
within and is surrendered in heart and mind
it is the living waters within
that will clean the mind of dross
and purify the soul
it is the living waters within that will drown
the separation
and so onward now
without the baggage and the thoughts that say
i am not good enough or right enough to go into
the waters
it is these thoughts that will block you from your
pure self
for there are none that cannot enter
only the heart and mind are to be purified
with honesty and good character
and steady ways --
this will bear fruit in time
for sure
but for now go on and love what is here
be in love with the pure soul
that is so fresh
be in love with this moment
and go on

returning to the core

those that come to know the real
are the ones that wear the cloth for the right reasons
these ones are not playing about with externals
and seeking to make a show of the tradition that is rich
and filled with mystery and tapasya of the honored masters
that have a carved a way to the cave of the heart
where shiva presides as light and rich stillness that
is unwavering and filled with majesty
these ones have walked in the fire and burned the illusion
to ash for it to die away completely as if it never was
these ones walk with intensity within and do not go around
in idle ways seeking to flaunt and gossip
or call themselves to be the center of attention
but stay within their own counsel to ride the waves of desire
and passion in steadiness and graciousness within
and have come the end of the games of mind with it's false show
and shadow nature
to rest in the eternal light of all

like the Buddha who came in as a prince but was not satisfied
with this lifestyle as it did not ring of the real
for him who was to be the awakened o ne
he was to go onward into the dark night of the soul to encounter himself
and see what was there that was true and held up as a constant
and what was false and died away with enquiry and holding steady
this is what Buddha means to be *awake*
which is what consciousness in it's purity is always within
and not divided our owned by any soul
no matter how honored or upright standing
still it is only the one that has set the tides of mind to be stilled
that can only be called *awakened*

Buddha found himself under the Bodhi tree
he did not find something other but reality in its naked purity
this is what all wandering ones of heart are seeking
pure waters that are of the non-dual jewel nature
and sit resting stilled and perfect within always
not out in the exterior where mind plays about and creates
haunting imagery and thought formations that rise and sink
and jostle about to create a world of dream ...a web work
of opposing energies ...
this is the playground of maya --
the goddess of deception and unending reflections that pass thru
the mind and are seized by the unawakened and called real
but the mind is only made of chit which is pure consciousness
in reality
what passes through is a reflected appearance that has been gathered in
and turned into something else by the one that is called persona or ego
(which means *mask* in latin) --
a covering of the false -- a face and a name that is contained in a body
called *me*
this is what the ones in the world are transfixed with and many are not even
aware or looking for what lies at the depths of the soul which is *light* only
these ones move unconscious of the truth
and migrate onward to realm upon realm in shadow
the soul that seeks in earnestness and love will begin to unfold unto itself
what is real in time
but before this the bardos of mind are passed through like a death in which
layers of consciousness are traversed and moved thru --
the Guru's pointings are to not be taken in by these layers of consciousness that
have as there base no-thing and are truly not a support in themselves
but like mist that rises over the seas and waters and dissipate again
and cycle about -- ghost like, truly and made of no-thing in reality...
the mind when entranced by this imagery creates more and more of the same
but the when the heart is abided in as the Guru points out -- then these mental
concepts can be lost as they are not attended to by mind ...

so the sage is the one that traverses all of these layers -- sees them and releases them
to abide in the absolute reality which is the heart of all and not separate
or living in one place or another
but completely free as the sky and open air --
impartial, impersonal and living in this moment as a light without covers or
a body or a name or an agenda or anything else that is of mind ...
this the chudamani or jewel of the heart that Shankara speaks of in his writings
he is a great one that came in to clean up the advaitic watered down ways
that were taking place and bring it back to it's true nature ---
what an amazing accomplishment in such a short life he lived
as GuruSwamiG has taken religion, shorn it clean of all the nonsensical
ritual along with the watered down teachings that come from confused minds
cleaned it of the false and breathed fresh life into these very precious teachings
as well as put original practices into place that are powerful and majestic
and breathe grace and beauty into stale energies that have lurked about
unprecedented is this Guru's place here on earth -- like all that have came
and rocked this world and cleaned out the false coward type personalities that lurk
and seek to latch on to confused, feeble minds that seek attention and do not know the right way
this Guru will not stand for this kind of nonsense and will take it and put it down
where it lay helpless not to come again and attempt to replace the dark for light
what a thing to even imagine that could happen --
when Guru's like this one are here now ...
Kali in her beauty laughing at the false and that which carries misdeeds that feed on
ignorance ...
never will this be acceptable to Kali -- never will this take place when the light of all
is forever victorious in the ones that are here to burn the untruth away

sannyasi life (continued)...

the one that comes into the sannyasi life is
to sit in the heart
there is no other place to reside that is more pure
the sannyasi comes into the death that leaves the former life behind
not to entertain it in mind again
as it is what the sages call the *unseeing* way
it does not have any light that will bring freedom within it

no matter what the form is doing..
whether the feet are placed on the earth to move or one
is seated and still
the body is not to be identified with as it is not the real
it does not have any substance that is holy or pure
and is made only of impurities and soiled compounds that rise and fall
it is not the absolute that is untainted

when the sannyasi speaks, his mind is to be within equanimity
not attached to what is being said
energies are not to be spent attempting to *figure out* an experience
this is a waste of the moment --
it will not bring about a still mind, but keep the wheels turning
towards understanding that is of logic and intellect

when the sannyasi is asked to do something
he is to get to it right away and not dawdle about in idle wasting of time
because life is not on his time table --
this type of mind-set is ego-based and has no place within the spiritual realm

**what does the sannyasi wear?
nothing truly
he is naked within and seeks nothing to cover over pure beingness
**what does the sannyasi give up?
the inner personal world that is separative in nature
**what does the sannyasi learn?
he is to transcend learning of collected knowledge
and come into no-mind
which is *knowledge stripped bare of intellect*
**what does the sannyasi hold onto?
the staff of truth and light -
until all wears away within, leaving non-dual consciousness to reign
**what does the sannyasi posses?
a burning desire for truth that is not tainted with desire for worldly pleasure
and fame
*what does the sannyasi love?
the truth that is the same as is own heart without waves of personal desire
**what does the sannyasi build?
a foundation of honesty, transparency and integrity
to walk a path that brings internal freedom in the end..
**what does the sannyasi find happiness in?
contemplation of the o ne --
unbroken quietude ....
**what does the sannyasi befriend?
the company of the good and pure hearted
as well as the opening up to all that comes in life
as a matter of course without attachment or aversion..
**what does the sannyasi bring to humanity?
words of spirit and beauty that live beyond suffering
his presence is what continues to incite souls towards the good..
**what is the sannyasi's  final end like?
if his mind is completely still, there is no end to this o ne
he lives forever as eternal light and pure presence
*what are the sannyasi's steps towards?
freedom always
everlasting wholeness that is within beautitude
and non-dual reality

heart pointings

*the sadhu* (reposted from sannyas/sadhu life)

what is his name?
-he has none
what is his family?
-none
what is his bread?
-the earth and what is given to him by others
what are his questions?
-what is truth?
-what is real?
-what is my true nature?
how does he go about finding it?
-by being still
how does he live?
-alone
how does he dwell?
-in caves or wherever he finds himself
how does he know when he has completed?
-there is no one left to ask anything
how does he find God?
-by being still
how does he worship?
-by loving his own heart and seeing God everywhere
how does he know what love is?
-by being love
how does he know what kindness is?
-by being kind and honest with all of nature
how does he know when the light is near?
-because he cannot find himself like he was
how does he know the beginning?
-by finding the end
how does he know the end?
-by finding the beginning
what is his true name?
-the absolute
what is his joy?
-God
what is his mighty sword?
-the sword of knowledge
what is his birthright?
-to know his true nature
when is his mind pure?
-when the shadows rise no more
is it true that he dies and is never reborn?
-yes, if his mind is completely still
what can i do to be like this?
-let go of attachments
what can i do about fear?
-stop thinking of yourself
what if i am a householder?
-then your heart is in the home
what about truth in the home?
-find it in love with your family
what will i do if i live without knowing the truth
-you will have another chance

book of the heart

the book of the heart
has within it poetry of light
that rings of beauty beyond compare
and awesome peace in which there is no end
the writing is not of the world in which
the focus is on relationship and dramatic playing out
the focus is the pure soul
the non-dual in which there arises nothing to occlude
clarity...
the book of the heart does not dwell outside
but within where life is joy
and has never been separate or apart in worldly ways
poetry flowing of silent beauty
and grace steady and unwavering
as the masters words that come on the breath
of clear waters
and deep compassion
that will strip the false away
to make the original substance shine through
so rich within the soul
that the one that listens melts and never is reborn
as a being that suffers again
this is the great wisdom
of the saints, sages and masters of now
take it up dear soul
and wear it within like a trusted friend
that will set you on the majestic mountains
in the land of the living
and bring you to the homeland of o ne
never to make your way outward again
in seas that are unsettled...

entering deep waters...

mental waves
rise and fall
on the surface of this glorious ocean
that sits deeply real..
when the vision is externalized these waves
appear as all that exists
totally consuming the being and the world manifests
like an eclipse over the moon......
this is how it is when mind overshadows the light...
what is it that will make one sink deeper
dear seeker of heart..
what?
not grasping at the empty risings that point
always to your false self
this way is never to be rested and settled
not a drop of the illusion will set the heart free
as even a single drop of poison makes
the clearest waters impure and unhealthy to consume
it is said rightly in the bible
"He that findeth his life shall lose it:
and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it"
so is the one blessed that surrenders
the inner private world...
and allows grace to wash this most
false show
of *me and mine* away ...
the paradox the sages sing of
mind will never grasp
this simultaneous death and bursting of pure life ..
in one moment...
love this is how it is ...
when grace is allowed to enter
let go friend and
see...

rishikesh (india part #4)

rishikesh is where Guruji spent the majority of her time while in india..
it is a crowded place filled with a constant flow of colorful life of all sorts and varieties.... a steady stream of indians, tourists, sadhus, cows, monkeys and beggars line the walkways...
devotional worship and rituals
are constantly taking place near the ghats or along the dirt paths that are laden with cow dung and mud from the last rains..
as usual Guruji escorted us to a decent place to stay that had a restaurant downstairs...
... one could even order american style food..
the area  in rishikesh that we hung out much of the time was relatively small
it made for easy travel on foot with market stalls and cafes lined up throughout..
have written about rishikesh in the first post entitled india (part # 1) ...
this is where we spent the majority of our time ....  wandering about and relating to the sadhus,
market vendors and beggars...
though we spent our days in the thick of sadhu life... it was not near to the degree that Guru lived several years back when she was in rishikesh...
she lived on the banks of the ganges for a time with a group of sadhus (this is where she entered realization)
it was a very rare thing for a sadhvi (female sadhu) to live in the *raw* open land with just a little sparse hut set up ...
she would bathe in the ganges early every morning and that water was *COLD* she said many
times....
(i can attest to this as did dip the feet in awhile and brrrrr)...
one of the sadhus she lived with  (who has now entered maha samadhi) was very dear to her and took the role of watching over her ....he took this role *very* seriously it sounded like from the stories
she told about him....
there are many different sects of sadhus in india -
each dons a different style and color of robes (or lack thereof as in the case of the naga babas who roam stark naked)...
one sect of sadhus are called aghoris -- some these sadhus wear all black...
they are Shiva devotees and engage in extreme practices and austerities as a means to break through
mental conditionings and attachment to form...
there were a group of aghoris in rishikesh that we met... one of these sadhus had a very peaceful
presence and did appear to be absorbed in sadhana and deep contemplation...
we would see him along our route everyday and Guruji would praise him for holding his concentration
within....
most of the sadhus in rishikesh, Guruji was well acquainted with and they recognized her
and called to us to come over as we walked along...
(with the exception of the ones that knew of her strong presence and tough love style manner.. these ones would run away )....
Guruji gave several diksha ceremonies on the ghats of the ganges during our stay there...
initiation was given to a sadhu as well who claimed that he was going to change his ways...
which meant that he would stop smoking cannabis and hanging out with the wrong crowds ..
he vowed that he would immerse in sadhana and try to be honest...
the spiritual name given to him by Guruji was Kali das  --
when diksha was given in the early years, the spiritual name given always ended in das which
means *servant of* ...  so his name meant *servant of Kali* or to be surrendered to that energy that
cuts thru conditionings ....  a great name indeed ....
this sadhu hung out with us much of the time we were there...
he was rather endearing, but one could still feel the mischief in him and unsteady energy that he carried...
Guruji was very generous with him and gave him some clothing and food ..
some of the sadhus we encountered appeared to be in need of hospital care .. they had wounds
or illnesses...
to live outside and sleep on the hard earth with the mosquitoes and rainy seasons and barely a cover or wrap can be brutal on the form...
so the majority do give in to smoking cannabis as a means to numb out from the rough lifestyle...
so many are very thin as food becomes secondary...
but even when money was given to take care of the needs ..  it was found out that they did not go
to the hospital at all, but spent their money on more smoking and nonsense...
this is when Guruji would get after them for their dishonest actions and she did not speak in a
shy voice about it ...
Kali das was no different... even though he was given such grace .. he was found later smoking and
hanging with the group of babas that were not good influences....
of course he was caught by Guruji and you can bet that this was addressed ...
(at the end of our stay there,  it was not looking promising that Kali das would clean up his act)...
it is a *very* strong pull for sadhus to go back to the old ways that one is used to ....  especially when
this area was saturated with fake sadhus and so many masquerading as Gurus or seekers ..
along our daily walks we also saw some sadhus engaged in austerities of all sorts...
one sadhu was found with his arm held straight up in the air everyday -- he said so far he had held it there several weeks..
and was working towards holding it up for several years or more...
there was another little sadhu in his hut who attended to his needs and appeared very devoted to aiding
this sadhu in his laborious task...
after several days we walked further into rishikesh ...  Guruji showed us where she used to live
with the group of sadhus on the banks of the ganges...
the little hut was gone --
she said a lot of the babas had been run out of the area due to their dishonest ways and lifestyle...

we walked over the suspension bridge across the ganga called lakshman jhula..
it took quite awhile to make it across as
every bit of space was crowded with motorcycles, cows, monkeys, beggars and droves of people of all types
and forms....
Guruji said this is where the beloved sadhu that watched over her entered maha samadhi --
the mind fell away easily while walking over this bridge ... an indescribabale feeling of peace entered.
the energy there was extraordinary...
Guruji said within her journey while walking across it, she lost body consciousness... this is understood...

in the early morning hour, we went to one of the temples in which rituals were performed to the
shiva lingum --
liquid and flowers was poured over the lingam as a means to honor shiva and shakti...
devotees chanted *om namah shivaya* which means "i bow to Shiva.. the lord of the yogis..
the spirit that dwells within all hearts"...

this is all the flow that is coming for now...
our next stop was to be dharmsala -- up in the foothills of the himalayas where the Dalai Lama and buddhist monks reside...

dear wanderer...

dear wanderer,
tread with an open mind and heart
through the land of the transient..
do not sit by the signposts that are only showing
of a reality much broader than body and mind...
rise in the morning and drink of waters that are pure
in the way of imbibing the teachings -
sit in the day as a one that is detached and a mere observer
of this empty appearance in which the body is no different
do not cling to the past or nourish future imaginings
as a wanderer there is no true home for beingness to lay its head
there is nothing to call your own
and no shade or sunlight that will distract one from the search
to enter into freedom
there is no word or deed however good or bad that will turn one away
from the straight and narrow road of the razors edge...
the hills and valleys of experience are a call for one
to come deeper ...
and an opportunity to see that there is nothing real and lasting
in the world of movement and change....
stay in the fires of purification and live freely
without fear of what is to come
or not come...
as both have no meaning in the present moment...

the journey is so very long friends
and may feel to have no end to it...
but indeed the end is the beginning
and the last step is the first into eternal light
though it is the longest journey ever of your life --
you will indeed arrive right here
where you have always been...
and the past identity that appeared to act in the world and
carry so much of a separateness ridden with sorrow
joy and everything in between
will vanish away
like it never was....

as you go about your journey...

as you go about your journey
will you remember your true self always
will you hold only the pure teachings that guide
and not the shadow of mental wandering
will you keep in your heart a faith that all is well
and that all will right itself in time
will you hold in your pack a piece of bread that
is to be eaten in joy as remembrance
of life so graciously given..
will you sing openly the hearts song
with love and praise to be here now
and be glad to have this opportunity
to find freedom...
will you let all life be free and not seek
to posses what was never yours...
will you stay steady within all life experience
and not run when the dark presses in...
will you love the earth the same as your body
and not think of yourself to be
this or that...
will you turn not away from suffering inside
and sit with it in equal mind
will you be content amongst all circumstances
even when all is taken...
will you see beyond the outer expression
and into the heart that is true...
will you find your true home in nature
and not within four walls that hem in...
will you drop the mind of pride and greed
so a fresh reality can enter in...
will you walk the trails of love and light
and seek company that is good..
will you set nothing apart from you
so as to make it high or low...
will you contemplate the truth at dawn and dusk
so as to shed the covers
will you live a way that is within beauty
but care not
if you are applauded or criticized....
will you live life so purely
and within the moment
that your past is completey forgotten...
will you be quiet now in this moment
and allow life to simply flow
as it is....

Diksha Ceremony

there was much offered in the past (by Guru) in the way of ceremonies
and practices that are not so freely given now
this is because many students have come asking for blessings
stating that the heart and mind are ready for a deeper commitment to the spiritual search
but later, left the path when something in the world was deemed more desirable
this happened so often that grace that flowed so abundantly back in the earlier days
dried up --
there was much hypocrisy, false words spoken and actions that displayed so clearly
the seekers heart was never in the right place to begin with....
these ones chose to take advantage of what was offered in a way to *gain* something
for themselves ---
it just looked like a good thing at the time and when the road got
rocky ...  they bailed .....
a very sad happening
have witnessed it so much over the years and
not just by newcomers, but just as much by those that have been on the path
many a year....
this is why things have changed so dramatically in the ashram...
it is a direct outcome of those that come with wrong intentions and false words..
by no means is it because Guru is not generous in giving...

Diksha is one of the ceremonies that is not forthcoming like it was....
and it is uncertain what will take place with it.... so do not want to give the impression that it
is offered freely in the least...
the purpose of writing about it is to give a *feel* for what it is...
then those that are indeed committed within can nourish what it stands for in heart and mind...
as this is what truly really matters....

Diksha is initiation given by Guru as a means to bond the seeker to the spiritual path
seekers that take diksha are to be dedicated and sincere within as well as (ideally) desire
to walk the path for a lifetime(s)..
however, (it used to be) that diksha did not carry the heavy commitment of the
renunciates such as celibacy and letting go of worldly life --
(though most, if not all of the sannyasis have taken diksha first)
will say however that the path has now changed so that those that receive the *deeper* teachings
are to now be within the renunciate life ...
these are the only ones that will be offered diksha and/or sannyas (when and *if* this blessing comes forward again in the future)..
this is because the path laid out by Guruji is meant truly to be for those that are 100% dedicated
and are within the mind-set of a renunciate ...
it cannot be walked with one hand gripping tightly to the world and the other attempting to hold  to the path....
there will be no lasting progress this way as it works against the goal of the practices ...
(which is to cut attachments and conditionings so that ultimate liberation can be revealed)...
if there is an unwillingness to let go within, then the energy is working against the grain really
which is not for the best...
if the heart truly desires to be within the world, then better to be honest with this....
this is why *friends of the path* was created
so that those that desire to be in the world
and still continue a connection with the beginning practices and teachings can do so...
such is the way of Guru's grace....

The Diksha Ceremony

The seeker wears white to symbolize purity and coming into the ceremony *fresh*
wiped clean of the past and worldly attachments...
the seeker brings a gift and flowers to offer Guru to show gratitude for the
blessing of initiation as well as the great honor of being in the presence of Guru -
the sadhaka is asked to kneel and propitiate Kali as a way of showing dedication and
offering over of the heart and mind to the path.....
then the sadhaka is asked to kneel before the *empty* Guru chair and again offer up the
heart and mind to the search to liberation....
Guru does not sit in the chair as a symbol of showing that truth is formless and not contained
in a body or mind  -- nor can it be found in any external appearance.....
after this, the sadhaka is asked to kneel in front of Guru in which the mantras are infused in the
chakras -- ending with the heart chakra
each mantra carries a special vibration to break down the conditioned mental holdings and are
extremely potent...
the diksha ceremonies given are similar in some ways, but entirely unique in others depending on the energy that is present....
like all else that is within pure grace, what takes place in the ceremony is spontaneous and perfect for what is needed at the time....
there are special oils used, incense and such that are part of the ceremony as well...
after the mantras are infused --
a spiritual name is given by Guru that has to do with a quality the seeker already has (and needs
to enhance) or a quality that is not present and needs to be nourished...
the vibration of the spiritual name is very potent and aides to wash away the energy of the mundane mind and past attachments....

The energy of the ceremonies are extremely strong, yet completely balanced and can really
bring out strong emotions and/or shifts in consciousness never before experienced....
there is a mystery about it as well as a grace-filled beauty...

Diksha as well as sannyas are indeed honored blessings and are to be cherished dearly
if one has had the opportunity....
if not, no worries....
if the heart is pure, sincere and indeed desirous of liberation
what is needed will unfold in the right time, there is no doubt...
until then, the symbology of the ceremonies point always within and
the *heart* of the ceremony can be nourished, within every moment--

Sannyasi life and ceremony

Sannyas is like a rebirth into another life
a life that does not carry with it the
entanglements of the past
it is the opportunity to break the bonds of identification
with the world, family and preoccupations that
one is attached to
as well as
the conditionings that have driven the mind for
lifetimes

There are many ways to come into the spiritual path
and many practices that can be engaged
but sannyas is different in the way that it is not meant to vary
according to the whims and changing desires of the seeker
It is a traditional path that has within it the substance
of the rishis and the sages that have
completed the journey...
It is a beautiful and mysterious path that speaks
(in the form of rituals and symbols) to  the shedding
of attachment to body and mind
with the aim of uncovering eternal freedom within.

The sannyasi is different than a regular seeker in that
this one's vows are to uphold the scriptures and the light
of the tradition as well as renounce worldly drives
and pursuits. A sadhaka or seeker that has not taken
up the sannyasi cloth is more a broad seeker that is for the most
part still engaged in the world and desires to be
more peaceful and harmonious **with** life, nature, family etc...
(not to renounce them)
the sadhaka does not journey alone like the sannyasi -
he or she is still connected to society and it's activities.

If the sannyasi is found within society and is engaged
in the endeavors of work (in the world) and family etc.. then this one is to keep
the light of truth as foremost and not be pulled by the sway
of dual activities as this focus on the external is what keeps separative energies
in motion.

The goal of the sannyasi is to discover the true nature
by directly confronting mental conditionings as they arise
also practices infused with the grace of Guru are engaged
to destroy the conditionings as they emerge..

A sannyasi goes through a ceremony that is rich in tradition and meaning
First white robes are worn that symbolize purity and the freshness of
new birth. This part of the ceremony is literally
like the sannyasi's funeral as it represents dying to the old life, habits and ways
and opening the door to the path of renunciation (the laying down of all earthly attachments).
The sannyasi's head is shaved to symbolize letting go of attachment
to form and releasing vanity -- The head is naked - the symbology here
is that the sannyasi is to be like a newborn babe -- fresh as the day the form came into being. The sannyasi will also bathe in the Ganges naked.... which symbolizes releasing the conditionings into mother Ganga to purify and rinse away... and also coming in and walking the earth unstained (naked) without the experiences of worldly drama .......
****the sannyasi is literally at this point supposed to be dead to the past -
traditionally any talk of the sadhus formal life is not to pass the lips ....
the sadhus family is now satsang (or company of the wise which includes sincere sadhus
and Guru)
the preceptor or wise elder (Guru), the sole guide and is what is to
be looked to for spiritual sustenance  -
what took place in the mundane life has nothing to offer the sadhu in way of aiding with **progress
on the journey**
and spiritual progress or uncovering the non-dual reality is to be held foremost in the sadhus life now****

Rituals and chants are said during the ceremony that are intended to purify, release and
dissolve away the past life.
The sannyasi sits around a dhuni or ritual firepit as the chants are being said. A flower petal is thrown in the fire with each chant to symbolize the sannyasi's heartfelt devotion to the tradition and quest as well as the burning up of all holdings. If the sannyasi does have hair, a lock of hair is thrown in the fire to symbolize burning away attachment to form.

The sannyasi then changes into orange/saffron robes that have the meaning of burning away mental dross -- like a fire....
the sannyasi is given a dandi (a spiritual staff) as well as a begging bowl. The staff is what holds the sannyasi steady while within the journey (representative of truth and  the light of Gurus wisdom) ... this is what is to be leaned on as the journey unfolds... The begging bowl is symbolic of relying completely on grace for sustenance and strength ....  whatever is given is to be taken in gratitude and without complaint as it has come from the heart and is what will keep the body strong to continue the journey This is all the sannyasi carries as the bare feet step on the path --

***If physically the sadhu/sannyasi does not have the elements of wandering and the open earth available or the lifestyle is not permitting (which is true of the sannyasis here on this path)....  Then this one is to live as if it were true in the heart....

-  Naked is coming into the journey fresh in mind and heart with a willingness to shed the coverings   and attachments....
-  The Ganges are living waters within that purify infused with Guru's grace and compassion....
-  The staff, the light of truth (the vows and Guru's pointings) that one *leans on* and follows without waver .....
-  The begging bowl represents surrender  and relying on grace for sustenance... taking into the heart what comes in life with gratitude ......***
-  The dhuni fire pit is symbolic of the fires of purification or pure consciousness that are to burn all that is not pure to ash....

One must understand that the sannyasi symbols are truly symbolic and point to the journey within which is where the road and the end are ---  not outside in the exterior....
This is why it is such compassion that Guruji offered sannyas to westerners so that these ones could still live this life even without having roots in India or elsewhere -- because, sannyas is of the heart and has nothing to do with gender, culture etc..... these are only externals....  and are not related to freedom or the absolute -- it lives in all hearts and is the birthright of all to come into it....

The sannyasi is given a spritual name by the Guru-
** (A Guru is integral ... there is no such thing as a self-proclaimed sannyasi -- the sannyasi comes into the tradition by way of the Guru's blessing and grace... there is no other way to come into )**
The name given is infused with Guru's compassion and grace -- it's energy points to a quality that the sannyasi already posses and needs to enhance or a quality that is to be nurtured and brought forth...  The name of a sannyasi ends in ananda which means bliss --  **the bliss of fulfillment for example (Siddhananda)**
the name given is very powerful as it carries a transformative energy infused with Gurus grace ..it is symbolic of leaving the mundane world and baggage go...  and journeying forward into the land of the mystic....

The story of Buddha

Buddha sat under the bodhi tree to clear
his mind of the false
why did he come to sit and how
did he find himself under the tree

He was born in a family of wealth
that were focused on externals
clothes, royal trappings and games of love, war, sex
and worldly pleasures were their mind sets
this was very superficial in nature
and did not hold to any substance
or find its way into the heart of the young
seeker
he was looking for something other than
what came like this and gave no lasting return
he was wanting to be free of all attachments
of form and desire
to rid his mind of the false energies that rose
to haunt his soul in the morning, day and evening
he was not wanting to live like a king
for it held no lasting value

Once his longing for freedom fully blossomed
and he knew for certain he was not a man of
the world
and did not want delve further into the life
that was handed so easily to him
(like a plate filled with wonderful
foods and pleasures right at hand)
When he knew for certain
he had enough of all of this
and that his desire was firing elsewhere
in the heart to seek
this is the evening when
he took to his horse and went out with the help of his long
time companion
and then journeyed forth alone
he did not bring with him heavy trappings of the past
as this would be very cumbersome and daunting
for he was to journey through mountain passes and
into lands that were very rigorous
so why then would he bring the heaviness of his
past with him
he left the wealth
he left his family
he left his child (in good hands with those in the
community to care for)

So he moved forward
what he found in the beginning was suffering
suffering that he had been shielded from before
and he was shocked
he saw people starving and gaunt
like skeletons
pain wracking their eyes and heart
he saw souls lost and left to waste away like shadows
he saw old age and decrepitude
he saw poverty
he saw struggle and deep despair in the eyes
of those sitting by the roadside
what a shock this was indeed
as nothing like this had ever been revealed
before

He did not go to feed these souls food
or find them water
he did not bless them or help them up to stand
he did not call them come near or even pray for them
instead, he resigned himself to find freedom so that all of
humanity would have a map out
to be free of suffering eternally

So he wandered through the forest
barefoot and clothed only in a bit of cloth
with the elements coming in fully as there was no door
to shut or any locks in this open land
he carried no money
he begged for food and alms
he ate what he found
shrubs and berries
seeds and even earth when there was nothing
he slept on the dirt under the full moon
with the wild animals of nature's creation
and listened to their call in his ear
he encountered dangers
snakes, leopards, tigers and all the
wild things that people shun
and he sat shaking and petrified
but stayed, sat, walked
and continued

If he were to go back to where he came from
he would not be the buddha
or the example of glory
that he is
or the one that showed the way out
of suffering
he would be another creature
that sank into worldly desire and was lost
to their own true nature
like so many others
he would not have awakened
to the truth

So he wandered and sank into himself
in loneliness and dark places
but moved forward
he brought a lamp and this is the lamp
that lit his soul up
(not an external light)

he had no guide

**(Though this is not what is spoken
in the scriptures as the way that all can take
without a guide.
The majority need a true sturdy guide.
He is a rare example.)**

Onward he went into the shadow land of mind
and its dark hauntings
the desires of flesh
the desires of food for the beast of ego
the desires for finding something for yourself
and holding it away as being yours only
all of the desires that haunt souls of those
in the shadows

He went into these dark energies
and did not run
and yes he was afraid and burned with the
desire to run
but did not

He found himself in many rough waters
in which he did not know what to feel or think
but he called inward always
to be present and steady

He almost wasted away to nothing
skin stretched across bone
and barely breathing
when a small girl
gave him some milk
he drank from it
because he finally understood
the body needed nourishment
and the soul needed the body for a time
to discover the truth
if the body died now
he would have lost this chance

The bodhi tree is a symbol
of his time spent in awakening
to his true nature
it is not a symbol that fits into your
picture of what it is
it is a shining example
of the forthright and steady efforts
of a soul to sit and discover himself
in nature with its spreading mystery
and open elements
the bodhi trees roots are so broad and flow
underground so deep that there is no way
that tree is going to be shaken
this is like the spirit that is steady
through the winds of change and testing
waters
this is why the ones that do enter reality are the ones
that continue in spite of obstacles

The bodhi tree is where buddha sat
for many a day
and many and hour
he did not wander around and talk
or ruminate about what he left behind
he just sat
steady
and the demons came
and the desires rose up
this is where he continued to penetrate
the nature of mind and its false ramblings
he shook them clean
and tore away the covers of the false
he wrenched the mind clean of its wanderings
and personal stains
he wiped the mind of its outer layers that
blocked the light of truth
he did not reflect on what this or that meant
or hold his knowledge against the scriptures
or the lights of others
he was looking to find out himself
so he could be a lamp to humanity
this is when he awakened
when all the false nature of impurities
burnt away
and the beauty of truth lit up

Buddha is awakened
and this is what it means
to be **awake**
